Virginia is an Occupational Therapist with over sixteen years’ experience working in the area of mental health, both in Australia and the UK. She has worked in government, non-government and private settings; in inpatient services, community services and group programs. She has also worked as lecturer in Mental Health at Central Tafe. She has extensive experience working with people with a wide range of mental health issues and drug and alcohol problems and has also worked with many carers and families, including young people who are caring for a parent with mental health issues.

Within her therapy Virginia works primarily with compassion and mindfulness-based approaches to mental wellbeing, particularly Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). She has a particular interest in emotions/emotion regulation and helping people to increase their capacity to manage uncomfortable or distressing emotions. Virginia believes that therapy is not simply about “getting rid” of unwanted symptoms and experiences but increasing our capacity to cope with the ups and downs of life in a more skilled and flexible way. This is more likely to happen when people can view themselves, their past experiences and choices from a compassionate and accepting perspective. She supports people to connect with their values and work out what it is they want in life in order to move forward. As an occupational therapist Virginia believes in the importance of connecting with activities, relationships and roles that give us a sense of meaning and purpose.

Virginia’s other professional areas of interest include meditation and stress management, complex trauma and working with voice hearers. She also has extensive experience in group work and for much of the last 10 years has been involved in running psychotherapy groups.
Based in Mount Pleasant, Virginia provides a warm and respectful environment where people can come to make sense of their experiences and get skilled support on their recovery journey.
